Synopsis

Representation
This film is about a crime related location containing guns, violence and strong language. Black Youth are represented as being gang related in some way and commit crimes without a second thought. Predominately black youth are living in a run down, deprived are of southeast London. Black youth are represented as being incredibly violent.

Ideology
The ideology of mainly black youth in this film is family, friends, relatives and identity. Values The production values of the ends are more like a documentary meaning that it makes the film seem more realistic. This is because of the camera angels and camera movement throughout the film.

Audience
The audience to this is film is multi cultural and multi ethinic between the ages of 15-20. The reason being is because it focuses on real life situations that youth come across and the fast action involved within the film.

Language
The language used in this product is what is known as street language which predominantly black youth use to communicate with others. Street language is used by mainly other ethnic minorities now as in parts of East London and North London where the population is multi cultural everyone mixes with each other and learns each others ways. This language is mainly to do with gang culture and people who are involved with it. Therefore it is not widely known to the general public neither is it used in a large population of the public. The codes and signs given in this short film are mainly shown through speaking and mise en scene. The way representation and codes are gained through characters speaking are their background and experiences so the audience can tell whether the character has came from south east London in an estate etc. Mise-en-scene is the main way of identifying the storyline, genre and characters and this is because of the repetition of conventions used in other dramas so how the film starts off in a social area showing what happens on a run down estate, showing day to day life of characters and representing real events.

Institution
Link productions are a company who sets out to support films with new ideas and creative projects. It is a company who specialises in commercial independent films.

Narrative
Audiences realize that the film has a beginning middle and end through the genre and they can also tell that it is a short film because it is on a bbc shorts page and has a 5 minute length. This is also shown as a film through cast, credits and camera movement.

Genre
The ends is a drama which involves youth, crime and gritty lifestyle and this shown through narrative which shows day to day lifestyles, representation of characters and mise-en-scene and the conventions used for example storyline, soundtracks etc.

Skin Deep

Synopsis
Romo, a mixed race boy, half English, half Pakistani, who lives in a run-down, all white neighbourhood. Passing as white, he has to confront his identity when his skinhead gang target a young Asian boy.

Representation: The film is about identity and how difficult it can be to be ‘different’ from the dominant race when you are young. Romo is half English, half Pakistani but he can pass for white and that is what he tries to do to make his life easier, even if it means putting his sister at risk of bullying. He was bullied when he was young and now that he can pass as white he chooses to do so because he is afraid. This film was good for me to look at because of the elements of fear, identity and fitting in.

Institution: the Film Council, East London Film Fund and Fantasia advertising. These funding institutions have a big influence on the film as they do not fund for films that do not portray their objective or status. Like east London film fund will help this film as it helps to send a good message across to people which is well needed in the east London part of England.

Values
The production values of this short film make it seem like it will be a long story to tell, and in addition a longer film altogether. This is mainly because of the effects used and the storyline which both seem to be clearly sophisticated.

Audience
The audience for this film are multi cultural between the ages of 15 and 30 as the issues represented in this film involves multi cultural living and also the way lighting and sound is used.

Language
The language throughout the film is very aggressive, intimidating and racist. This may seem disturbing for the audience but gives them a taste of what it is like to be the main character and also to back up the message of the film.

Ideology
The main ideology that is shown in this product is the importance of being safe and having an identity. Family are not important in the film and this is displayed by the protagonist

Narrative
Audiences can see that this is a film through the credits, bbc shorts and the storyline.

Daniel is another one of those kids who, like thousands dreams of becoming a professional footballer. On a very ordinary Saturday his journey takes a sudden and very tragic turn. Sport, urban, youth .

Representation
This film represents the youth of modern society whereby gang culture and territories are of importance to them. Females seem to be represented as the lighter side and more intellectual whilst the males are manly and follow the smarter female.

Institution
This film is self funded and has therefore not been mediated by any other sources or organisations. It must be about someone’s personal experience or view on London.

Values
The production values for “If Not Now When?” make it seem like what could be a drama series based on a true life story due to the way it is told and the realism. The realism is created through the fast paced camera movement and effects used to tell the real-life story.

Audience
The audience for this film are young between the ages of 16-20. This is because it has a fast paced storyline and the sound tracks used.

Language
Language used verifies that the people in this film are quite young in the age range of 18-21. This is because of the terminology and how they use it through the film. This is a stereotypical 18-21 year old because of this.

Ideology
Females are very important to the males in the film and friends are also significant. This is shown by males being slightly lower than females. Friends in the film are represented as a main priority to young people through the storyline. Football is another significant ideology which applies to most youth.

Narrative
The narrative is talking back about the past as the story goes on. This only happens every now and then in between dialogue. This is a very effective way of emphasising the person’s feelings and the preferred reading of the film. The narrator is a girl talking about her boy friend who had a similar tragedy which gives a realist feel as it is from personal experience. This helps to provide the beginning, middle and end sequences which appear clearly at the end.

Genre Drama that includes youth, sport and crime.

Representation
White youth are represented as being violent and surrounded around crime. The middle aged white people are violent, involved with crime but look after younger people to follow their footsteps.

Institution
The Uk Film Council and Screen South have funded this short film. The UK Film Council fund short films for new and upcoming directors and also support films about different ethnic minorities and their issues. Screen south is owned by the UK film council and support the same ideas.

Values
This film’s production values make it as if it was an actual real life issue but doesn’t make it feel real because of the soundtracks used and the lighting during most scenes. The editing also makes the film seem less realistic as sometimes during flashbacks there is a white glow which doesn’t match the theme to the film.

Audience
The audience for this film are people between the ages of 14-19 as the issues in this film apply to that age and the soundtracks also.

Language
The people in this short film have a northern accent and also use a lot of swearing. This is unusual for a film targeting a young audience but it would give a negative view to it and give a better understanding of the preferred reading.

Ideology
The ideology in Cregan is being able to stand up for yourself and being known to be people. In other words it is important that people know not to mess around with you.

Narrative
This is seen as a film due to the credits, soudtracks used, camera and it is on bbc short films.

Audience

Who are the target audience for short films?

Short films are generally made for people who want the experience of making a film, students for a media or film project or people who want to break into the industry. Therefore the audience for short films tends to be from the demographic of the people actually making the films. However, if an inexperienced director is making a film, he/she also needs to be very clear about who the product would aim to appeal to if it was a product aimed at the mainstream market.

Who are the target audience for the samples you looked at?

The Ends
This is a film about the issues of crime and youth/gang culture. From watching it I think the target audience is from a young demographic (15-20). I would argue this because of the cinematography, the pace and the soundtrack. the combination of these elements makes it appeal to a young audience. the message from the film is clear, if you get involved in gang culture you could end up paying the ultimate price, with your life. In term of market psychographic categories for young people, I think it would appeal mostly to REBELS because they would think it was cool although they might not get the director's preferred reading. DRIFTERS who aren't sure what they want, this could help make up their minds about how they feel about gangs. UTOPIANS are also a target audience because they would probably get the preferred reading and be enthusiastic about the message of the film.

Skin Deep
This film is about different cultures and ethnicities meeting together. In this particular film a young boy is half English half Pakistani living in England with a large population of racist white English people. It seems to target the audiences of 18-35 as it is about identity, who you are and how you treat other ethnicities so therefore it is quite a wider audience. UTOPIANS will be a good audience to target for this film as they want to make the world a better place and therefore the message in this film is to treat other ethnicities fairly and the same. In other words the preferred reading is that everyone is different in ways, but can with respect, be similar in a lot of other ways.

If Not Now, When?
This film is about youth culture also and involves day to day life which resolves in death for a young person making his way home. The audience of this film is young in between the ages of 16 and 20 and this is because of the people represented in the film and the slow to fast movement of the action and camera. Again this films main audience will be UTOPIANS and this time it’s because the message of this film is simple, violence and power equals death and hurt. In addition UTOPIANS would favor this as it gives the audience that message making them think about it a lot more and hopefully, understand why that is the message. Another type of audience for this product would be GROUPIES which are people who just want to be accepted and people who don’t to be alone in the world. This film goes from bad to good when the protagonist disbands from his group.

Cregan
Cregan is about the life of a young boy surrounded by violence, crime and guns. So the audience would be around the ages of 14 to 19 and this is because of the issues represented and how young people can learn from them and the soundtracks. TRENDIES are an audience for this film as they are people who suffer from their peers and the main character in this film does this and ends up getting revenge. UTOPIANS are an audience in some ways as they want people to stand up for them selves as it makes the world a better and stronger place if people stand up. But they may not like the idea of taking revenge or proceeding to the nature of violence which may disturb their viewing.

Who is the target audience for your film?

The target audience for our film FREEFORM are young adults in the age range of 15-21 and this is because of some of the problems faced throughout the film and the soundtracks. One of the main types of audience of the product is DRIFTERS as they are not sure what they want and this could be a possible path. The preferred reading of our film is, don’t crave power as rising power will get you back.

How will you measure the success of your products appeal to the target audience?

To measure the success of our product’s appeal towards our target audience we will upload the product on popular blogs like facebook and YouTube. In this way we can gather comments and gather some information about how much people liked it or disliked it. In the process of doing this, we will gain much more serious, reliable and in-depth data through our friends who will be honest about our product. By completing these ways, we have the opportunity to analyze our feedback and finalize our results.
